A moped rider died in a crash with a 2001 Ford Mustang after the rider ran a stop sign, Anderson County Coroner Don McCown said. The rider, 52-year-old Robert Gains, had just gotten his moped repaired and was close to home when the collision happened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Middleton and Doris McGill Jones roads, McCown said.
Gaines was not wearing a helmet and ran a stop sign before he turned onto Middleton Road in front of the Mustang, Cpl. Bill Rhyne with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.
The 17-year-old driver of the Mustang was taken to a hospital, but his condition was not known, Rhyne said.
McCown said Gaines died of head trauma at the scene and that it appeared Gaines was drunk at the time of the crash.
