Providence, R.I : Off-duty firefighter seriously injured in car crash on Saturday, Oct 24, 2015
An off-duty firefighter hurt in a head-on collision remains hospitalized.
Providence police are searching for the driver of a second vehicle involved in the crash that injured 27-year-old Matthew Gallant.
Police said Gallant was in a pickup truck that collided with an SUV at about 2 a.m. Saturday on the Smithfield Avenue overpass.
It took rescue workers about 30 minutes to free Gallant. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was reported in critical condition.
The Providence Journal reported that Gallant's condition was upgraded to serious on Sunday.
Police said the SUV driver ran from the scene.
Gallant joined the department in 2013 and is from a family of firefighters that includes his father, a retired battalion chief, and two uncles who are still members of the department.
