A 39-year-old driver from Lakeworth, Fla., suffered serious injuries in a crash that snarled traffic on Interstate 495 in Westford on Sunday afternoon when a MedFlight helicopter had to land on the highway.
Emergency crews were called to the northbound lanes of the highway near Boston Road in Westford at 4:30 p.m., and found a single-vehicle crash, according to state police.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver was in the high-speed lane when the car suddenly crossed three lanes of traffic and left the right side of the highway, according to state police.
The driver, whose name and gender were not immediately released, was flown to Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston by a MedFlight helicopter that landed on the highway.
A young child who was in the vehicle, whose age was not released, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lowell General Hospital by a Westford ambulance, according to state police.
Northbound lanes of the highway were closed for about 15 minutes so the helicopter could land, according to state police.
Northbound traffic was backed up at least as far as Littleton, and southbound traffic was backed up as far as Route 4 in Chelmsford.
State police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.
