Hammond, LA : Woman killed and husband in critical condition after three vehicle crash on Friday January 15 2016.
Louisiana State Police are investigating a three vehicle crash that left an Arkansas woman dead and her husband in critical condition.
State Police say the accident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Friday on I-55 in Hammond.
An initial investigation revealed that 26-year old Brittany Barber Spears of Franklinton was driving a 2004 Toyota Avalon in the northbound left lane of I-55 behind 62-year-old Thomas Stevens of Amite who was driving a 2014 Ford F-150.
Spears' car hit the back of Stevens' truck. After hitting the back of Stevens' truck, Spears lost control of her car and traveled across the median into the southbound lanes. Spears' car then crashed into a 2013 Kia Optima, driven by 64-year-old Charles Williams of Sherwood, Arkansas, head-on.
Williams, who was properly restrained at the time of the crash, was taken to North Oaks Hospital where he has been listed in critical condition.
Williams' wife, 60-year-old Mariam Williams, who was also wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Spears was taken to North Oaks Hospital with moderate injuries.
State Polcie do not believe impairment was was a factor in the crash but a routine toxicology test was taken from both Williams and Spears and sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis.
Stephens, who was not injured in the crash, submitted to a chemical breath test that showed no trace of alcohol.
