SOUTHBORO, MA : East Brookfield man arrested after 5-car Southboro crash on Tuesday, 10th September 2019

An East Brookfield man tried to escape after being involved in a five-car crash on Route 9 night, but was arrested after police found him hiding on Oak Hill Road, according to authorities.

Police arrested Brian Gernrich, 50, after the 10:18 p.m. crash. He is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent driving, driving with a revoked license, leaving the scene of a personal injury accident and leaving the scene of the property damage accident and was cited for speeding and a marked lanes violation.

Mr. Gernrich was released on bail and scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Westboro District Court. However, he did not appear for the arraignment and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Mr. Gernrich fled the crash scene and left an injured passenger in his 1996 Subaru Legacy, police said. The passenger’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to a press release from the Southboro Police Department.

Officers requested assistance from the Marlboro Police Department’s K-9 unit. Police dog Kaiser found him hiding near in the area of 15 Oak Hill Road.

He was taken into custody by Patrolman John Officer and taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for treatment, police said.
