2 Detroit motorists ejected in fatal crashes

Authorities are investigating two fatal crashes overnight in which drivers were ejected because they weren’t wearing seat belts, according to the Michigan State Police.

Troopers were called at 10:25 p.m. Tuesday to eastbound Interstate 94 near French Road for a crash where a driver lost control of his 2007 Dodge and struck the center median. The 66-year-old driver was ejected from the car and was rushed to St. John’s Hospital in Detroit by responding EMS. Law enforcement, who identified the man as Jimmy Earl Walk of Detroit, said he later died.

State Police also were dispatched at 3:35 a.m. Wednesday to the scene of a crash on northbound I-75 near Davison Freeway. The 24-year-old male driver of a 2002 Buick appeared to veer off the right side of the highway and when he tried to regain control, he sped back across the lanes into the center median.

The car overturned in the wreck and he was ejected. EMS took him to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. State Police identified the man as Lesean Khyrie Winfield Jr. of Detroit.

Alcohol doesn’t appear to be a factor in either crash. Both crashes are still under investigation, State Police said.
