Sedgwick County, KS : Man struck, died near K-96 and Rock Road on Monday afternoon, August 04, 2014
A 61-year-old El Dorado man who was struck and killed near K-96 and Rock Road on Monday afternoon has been identified.
Larry W. Dobbs, a former Winfield police chief, was outside his pickup shortly before 3 p.m. Monday walking in the median in an attempt to pick up Sheetrock that had flown off the back of another pickup truck. According to Kansas Highway Patrol spokesman Gary Warner, several vehicles had slowed down to avoid hitting the Sheetrock when “a good Samaritan” – Dobbs – attempted to help.
A 2006 Mack truck hauling rock gravel swerved into the median to avoid rear-ending the slowed vehicles but struck Dobbs.
The semi truck was driven by 66-year-old Kenneth Knebler of Wichita.
The accident happened just before 3-00 p.m. Monday in the westbound lanes of K-96, a Sedgwick County 911 dispatcher said. Dobbs was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident was west of Rock Road at K-96 mile-marker 294.2.
