Austin, TX : One dead, one critically injured in wrong-way Loop 360 crash on Saturday morning, September 10, 2016

A man was killed and another man was critically injured in a crash in West Austin on Saturday morning.

Austin police received a call at 6:24 a.m. of a car driving the wrong way in the northbound lane near the 2500 block of Capital of Texas Highway (Loop 360).

A vehicle in the southbound lane had apparently tried to alert the driver and warn oncoming traffic by flashing his lights, said Lt. Brian Gruetzner.

Despite the attempted warning, the vehicle crashed head-on with another driving northbound, Gruetzner said.

The driver who was driving the wrong way was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. Authorities believe he was in his 40s but have not released his name.

The man driving the other vehicle was transported to St. David’s South Austin Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.

The northbound lanes will be shut down as police investigate.
