Grand Rapids, MI : A 41-year-old man has died in a single-car crash at Westbound I-96 On Saturday, May 28th, 2016
A 41-year-old man has died in a single-car crash that has shut down westbound I-96 near the I-196 split.
The vehicle left the road and crashed into trees near Leonard Street. The man died at the scene, Grand Rapids police Sgt. Terry Dixon said.
He was alone in his vehicle.
Police suspect that speed was a factor in the Friday afternoon crash. Police will also look at weather conditions to determine if a heavy rain that fell in the area played any role.
Dixon did not provide details about the victim other than his age because the man's family has not been notified.
He said that the highway was expected to be closed for some time while investigators reconstruct the crash. He expected traffic to be backed up in the area with holiday travelers on the road.
Grand Rapids firefighters and state police troopers are assisting at the scene.
