A man from Crozet is currently being held at the Middle River Region Jail, facing two DUI manslaughter charges.

Police say 60-year-old Kenneth L. Barber is responsible for a crash that killed a Waynesboro woman and her daughter on Monday, April 20.

Morgan Phillips says she couldn't sleep Monday night, thinking about the crash that took the lives of two of the most important people in her life; her mother, 44-year-old Sandra Martin, and half-sister 12-year-old Haylee.

Martin was driving home with her daughter when they were hit. Virginia State Police say Barber ran a red light at the intersection of Route 250 and Route 792, smashing a Chevy Suburban into the Pontiac Grand Am being driven by Martin.

Investigators say Sandra and Haylee Martin died at the scene.

“She loved her little girl with all of her heart, and she went with her last night," Phillips said.

Haylee was an honor roll student at Kate Collins Middle School.

“I think it's very difficult for middle schoolers. It's very difficult for us as adults, for our teachers. They had a student at the desk yesterday who is not here today. That's a very difficult emotion for all of us,” said Waynesboro Superintendent Jeffrey Cassell.

Cassell says they're bringing in extra counselors to help students and teachers cope.

"Nobody deserves to feel the pain to lose a best friend and a little girl with so much life ahead of her. She never got to experience her heartbreaks or first date. She got her life taken from her by a drunk driver," Phillips said.

Phillips hopes her loss can be a lesson to the community.

"There's another way than to drink and drive to prevent this from happening to anybody else's kid, or their mom, or their dad, anybody else that they're close to. Your life can be taken from you with the blink of an eye," she said.

The family is working to set up a gofundme page to support Haylee's 15-year-old brother.
