New Orleans, LA : Man killed in crash on I-10 early Saturday morning in St. James Parish on September 6, 2014

A New Orleans man was killed early Saturday morning on Interstate 10 in St. James Parish when his car traveled into oncoming lanes of traffic and struck two other vehicles. Killed was 56-year-old Kenneth Nolting, a Louisiana State Police press release says, and another driver was hospitalized for injuries sustained in the crash. Nolting was driving a 1996 Nissan Altima eastbound on the interstate near Louisiana 641 when, shortly after 1:30 a.m. for unknown reasons, the car drifted to the left of the roadway. The Altima struck a median cable barrier and rode it for about a half mile before reaching an opening, where it traveled out of the median and into the westbound lanes on I-10. The car then struck a westbound Volkswagon Jetta driven by James Spears, 26, of Baton Rouge, spinning it into the path of an International box truck driven by Blerond Oda, 42, of Merrillville, Ind. Oda was treated for "moderate to serious" injuries at Interim LSU Hospital in New Orleans, and Spears was uninjured. All three drivers wore a seatbelt. While the release says it's unknown if Nolting was impaired, it also notes that "impaired driving continues to be a major problem throughout Louisiana...have a plan and designate a driver before you decide to operate e vehicle while impaired. A toxicology sample was taken from Nolting and will be tested for analysis. Impairment on the part of Spears and Oda is not suspected.
