TRENTON, NJ : Bordentown man ID’d in fatal crash in Hamilton on Monday, December, 18th 2017
The man who died in a car crash Monday along Interstate 295 has been identified as Robert Adams, state police said.
Adams, 56, of Bordentown, was behind the wheel of a Chevy Cruze around noon, near mile marker 61 in Hamilton, when he collided with the back of a tractor trailer parked on the shoulder of the interstate, state police spokesman Lt. Ted Schafer said.
Police released the car crash victim’s identity after notifying the family. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but police released additional details about it Tuesday following rampant speculation online about the circumstances that led up to it.
The semi had pulled to the side of the interstate after having apparent engine troubles. The tractor trailer driver placed safety triangles out in the shoulder, turned on his hazard lights and left to purchase parts to repair the disabled semi, Schafer said.
“The driver of the [semi] did everything he was supposed to do,” the state police spokesman said.
Police could not say at this point if the semi driver had returned from purchasing repair parts when Adams crossed over the right lane and slammed into the back of the tractor trailer.
Police are still investigating to determine what caused Adams to lose control of his car and plow into the semi, Schafer said.
Police have not ruled anything, including whether Adams, who will undergo an autopsy, had a medical condition that factored into the crash.
“We’ve got to do toxicology. We have to get statements from people,” Schafer said. “You have to let the medical examiner do their job at this point. Then we’ll have an idea of what could have been wrong. Sometimes people drift off the road for whatever reason.”
Although the police spokesman said it didn’t appear the semi driver was at fault for the crash, a determination won’t be made until the investigation is closed.
“The case is pending investigation,” Schafer said. “These generally take at least 30 days to clear.”
