A motorcyclist and his female passenger were killed when a Windstream Communications van turned in front of the bike on a two-lane road in the Ocala National Forest Tuesday afternoon.
The crash occurred on Northeast 160th Avenue Road near 205th Street as the service van, which was had been going north, turned left toward the driveway for a switch station, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers at the scene.
The van's driver told troopers he'd didn't see the motorcycle coming from the other direction when he turned into its path.
The motorcyclist tried to lay the bike down to avoid a collision but couldn't keep from hitting the van, troopers said. The driver — a man — died at the scene. The female passenger was taken by helicopter to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where she later died.
Their names were not immediately available.
The driver of the van, who was badly shaken up, did not appear to be injured. He voluntarily gave a blood sample for testing, as is customary in accidents involving a serious injury or death.
Neither motorcycle rider was wearing a helmet, troopers said.
Marion County Fire Rescue received the call at 3:21 p.m., and the first unit arrived at 3:34 p.m.
