HIGHLAND, IN : Highland woman on way to polls crashes vehicle on Tuesday, 8th November 2016
A 21-year-old woman on her way to the polls to vote Tuesday was seriously injured when she lost control of her vehicle on Interstate 80/94, state police said.
Jessica Kiel, of Highland, was westbound on I-80/94 at about 12:50 p.m. Tuesday when she lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons, according to an Indiana State Police news release.
Kiel's Chevrolet Aveo slid across all four lanes of traffic to the south and hit a 2006 pickup truck in the left lane, driven by Vincent Cornelius, 48, of Gary, according to police.
Kiel's Aveo then spun back north into the left middle lane, where the driver's side was broadsided by a semitrailer, owned by Catoosa, Oklahoma-based Oakley Trucking, loaded with 80,000 pounds of coke, a purified type of coal. The semi driver, 43-year-old Chad Bennett, of Monroe, Georgia, was not injured, according to police.
The driver of the pickup struck a concrete median barrier wall, but he was not injured.
Kiel was taken to North Lake Methodist Hospital in Gary with serious head and internal injuries before being airlifted to a Chicago area trauma center, according to police.
Family has been notified. This crash is still under investigation and no tickets have been issued at this time.
