Lorain, OH : Fatal crash claims life of Elyria man on Saturday, December 17th 2016

A fatal car crash in Lorain the afternoon of Dec. 17 is under investigation by the Lorain Police Department Traffic Bureau, according to a news release from Officer Kyle Gelenius.

Around 12:17 p.m., officers responded to a the 700 block of Cooper Foster Park Road. The release said the initial investigation revealed a silver 2008 Madza 3 was headed west on Cooper Foster before traveling off the right side of the road near the intersection of Orchard Hill Boulevard and colliding with a tree.

Edward Smedley, 37, of Elyria, was identified as the driver. Smedley suffered fatal injuries during the crash and was extricated from the vehicle by Lorain firefighters before being taken to the Lorain County Morgue, the release said.

Excessive speed is considered a factor in the crash, according to the release. It is unknown is alcohol and/or drugs were factors.

The crash, which closed area roadways for roughly four hours, remains under investigation. Anyone with any additional information regarding the crash is asked to call Gelenius at 440-204-2115.
