One man died after a single-vehicle crash early Friday on Ga. 18 West near Upper River Road in Jones County.

The victim was identified as Larry Woodard, 49, of Griffin, Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece said.

Woodard was an employee of E.R. Snell Contractor Inc., the general contractor for construction of the Gray bypass, Reece said.

He was driving a company service truck and was headed for the job site when he veered off the road, Reece said.

The 5:45 a.m. crash closed the roadway for more than five hours due to wreckage debris.

The crash on the busy road coincided with the first day of school and brought early-morning traffic to a standstill.
