ORLAND, IN : Racine man dies in Indiana crash on Thursday, December 15th 2016
A 37-year-old Racine man was killed Thursday morning in a van-semi crash on the Indiana Toll Road in the far northeast part of the state.
According to a release from Indiana State Police, preliminary investigation indicated that at about 9:10 a.m. Thursday, a 1999 Ford van driven by Jason W. Mateer of Racine was traveling west near the community of Orland in Steuben County when, for an unknown reason, it spun and left the roadway.
The van entered the median, passenger side first, then vaulted into the cab of an eastbound 1998 Volvo car hauler driven by Joseph P. Holman, 65, of Detroit, Michigan. Although police said both men were seat-belted, Mateer was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner’s Office and Holman was flown by air ambulance to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne. He was reported to be in critical condition early Friday, according to a report in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.
This crash remained under investigation as of Thursday, police said.
