Evanston, IL : Northwestern student killed in bicycle accident in Evanston Thursday evening, September 22, 2016

A Northwestern University student came into contact with a cement truck and was killed while riding her bike in Evanston Thursday evening.

The 18-year-old student was turning out of a lot at the university when her bike got stuck in one of the wheels of a cement truck heading northbound in the 2000 block of Sheridan Road around 5 p.m., police said.

The woman, who was unresponsive when Evanston paramedics arrived on the scene, was transported with multiple injuries to Evanston NorthShore University Hospital where she was pronounced dead, police said.

"A tragic accident," Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington said at the scene.

The accident occurred as the woman was heading west on her bike out of a university lot at Library Place. The truck had a green light and was already through the intersection, Eddington said.

He said the woman's bike appeared to come into contact with the curbside wheel of the truck. The impact caused the bicyclist to roll under the truck.

"She just misjudged the speed of the truck," said Eddington, "or didn't realize how long the truck was."

No citations have been issued to the cement truck driver, a 38-year-old Des Plaines resident, police said. The crash is currently being investigated by the Evanston Police Department's Traffic Bureau, with the assistance of the Major Crash Assistance Team, police said.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time, pending notification of her family, police said.
