MOUNT PLEASANT, WI : Bicyclist injured in hit-and-run crash in Mount Pleasant dies on Tuesday, 8th January 2019
Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin
An 18-year-old bicyclist who was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Mount Pleasant on Monday night has died, police said.
Police identified the victim Tuesday night as Teren Cagle, of Racine. The 71-year-old man suspected of driving a gray van that hit Cagle has been taken into custody and is in the Racine County Jail, police said.
Police found the van believed to have been involved in the crash late Monday night in Kenosha.
In a news release Tuesday, a Mount Pleasant police spokesperson said an off-duty Racine County sheriff's deputy spotted debris along Highway 32 in Mount Pleasant and found the cyclist in a ditch just before 11 p.m.
Medics took Cagle to Froedtert Hospital, where he underwent surgery and later died.
"After he was struck, we don't know how long he was sitting there. It appears the suspect hit the bicyclist and continued on," Sgt. Eric Relich said in a briefing to reporters. "He was lying there. He was breathing. He was unconscious. He obviously sustained some serious injuries."
Relich said detectives used paint chips at the scene and a car part, which had an identification number on it, to lead them to the suspected vehicle.
