Galesburg, IL : Henderson County couple killed in Galesburg crash on Wednesday night, April 5, 2017
A Henderson County couple was killed Wednesday night in a traffic accident on U.S. Route 34 in Galesburg.
Leonard Anderson, 71, and Carolyn Anderson, 66, of Oquawka died about 7:15 p.m. at Route 34 and Lincoln Park Drive, according to an Illinois State Police news release. They were driver and passenger, respectively, in a Toyota Highlander that struck unspecified equipment after it fell from a flatbed trailer.
The trailer loaded with gear was attached to a Ford F750 truck that was traveling west on Route 34, police stated. As the vehicle approached Lincoln Park Drive, some of the equipment atop the trailer struck that thoroughfare’s overpass.
Equipment then fell from the trailer onto Route 34. The Andersons’ vehicle, which also was headed west, was unable to avoid striking it.
Earl W. Feirge, 64, of Mexico, Mo., drove the truck, according to police. He was treated and released at the scene.
Westbound Route 34 was closed until almost 2 a.m. Thursday. The Lincoln Park Drive bridge over Route 34 remained closed Thursday morning.
Once the bridge is inspected and its structural integrity is assured, it is to reopen, according to the Galesburg Police Department. The reopening was expected to take place sometime Thursday.
Illinois State and Galesburg police, the Galesburg Fire Department and the Knox County Coroner’s office were among responders to the accident, which is under investigation.
