Sarasota, FL : Sarasota ballet dancer killed in bicycling accident on Wednesday June 4, 2014
A delivery truck driver faces charges after a crash that killed a bicyclist, who was a member of the Sarasota Ballet.
Sarasota Police say it happened at about 2 p.m. on Wednesday June 4.
Sarasota Ballet member Pedro Pupa, 20, of Brazil, was riding a bicycle in the 5400 block of Bay Shore Road.
A large delivery truck, driven by Willie G. Burns, 58, of Tampa, was making a right onto a service entrance road leading into the Ringling Museum.
Investigators say the delivery truck pulled in front of Pupa as he was approaching the road and failed to see Pupa or the bicycle.
Pupa's bicycle hit the side of the delivery truck and Pupa was injured. He was transported to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton where he died from his injuries Wednesday evening, according to Sarasota Police.
The Sarasota arts community is mourning Pupa’s passing.
“The shock and pain we all feel at Pedro's sudden death is unbearable. He was a beautiful dancer, a hard working member of the company, a true friend, a loving son and most of all a wonderful person to simply be around. He will forever be in our hearts and through this he will never truly be gone,” wrote the Sarasota Ballet on its Facebook page.
Burns was charged with violation of right of way to a bicyclist.
The investigation is ongoing.
