JANESVILLE, WI : A single-vehicle crash into the pavilion in Lower Courthouse Park on Wednesday, November, 22nd 2017
Janesville police were involved in a pursuit early Wednesday morning that resulted in a single-vehicle crash into the pavilion in Lower Courthouse Park.
At about 1:38 a.m., police responded to a red Hyundai Santa Fe traveling northbound on Main Street without headlights on, Sgt. Ben Thompson said.
The vehicle accelerated up Pease Court past Parker Drive, traveled west on Prospect Avenue and then returned to Parker Drive, Thompson said.
The driver then headed south on Parker Drive. At the intersection with Court Street, the driver lost control of the car, drove down the hill, went airborne over the pavilion steps and struck the concrete pavilion, Thompson said.
The driver fled the scene but was found and taken into custody. He was identified as Everett K. Tipler, 48, of Beloit, according to a news release from the Janesville Police Department.
A female passenger was in the vehicle during the crash, Thompson said. She was helped out of the back seat by police but did not show signs of injury. Tipler was transported to a local hospital with complaints of leg pain, Thompson said.
A third person was in the vehicle when the pursuit began but exited the vehicle on Pease Court, Thompson said. Police have been in contact with that person, he said.
Police ended the pursuit on Milwaukee Street and Parker Drive, Thompson said. Janesville police discontinue pursuits once risk to the public outweighs the danger of the person getting away.
Tipler was arrested on charges of felony fleeing an officer, receiving stolen property, first-offense intoxicated driving, reckless driving, operating without required lamps, and a warrant for failure to pay child support, according to a news release.
He is being held at the Rock County Jail pending his initial court appearance.
State patrol helped investigate the accident, Thompson said.
