Beech Grove, TN : Illinois man killed in crash on I-24 East in Coffee County on Tuesday, December 29, 2015

A man was killed in a crash on Interstate 24 East at the Coffee County-Rutherford County line.

Two commercial vehicles, an RV and a car were involved in the wreck, which was reported around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Officials said the victim, 63-year-old Theodore Van Wermeskerken, was driving his pickup truck when he was side-swiped by an RV. His truck then crossed into the median and hit two commercial trucks.

Van Wermeskerken, of Illinois, was ejected from his vehicle. He died at the scene.

A 35-year-old man and his 6-year-old passenger in one of the other vehicles also suffered minor injuries.

Eastbound lanes were closed for several hours, but have since reopened. Tennessee Department of Transportation officials said congestion remains in the area.

TDOT said crews will return to the area after rush hour for more cleanup.
