Longview,WA : Two die in train/vehicle collision north of Kelso on October, Friday 27th 2017
A man and woman died when a northbound Amtrak passenger train smashed into their vehicle in the Horseshoe Bend area north of Kelso at 9:30 Friday morning, according to BNSF Railway and the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office.
The mother of one of the people who died had crossed the tracks in another vehicle just moments before.
All freight and passenger trains were shut down through the area until the early afternoon while the wreckage was cleared and tracks and the train were inspected, BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said. The line was reopened and traffic resumed around 1:30 p.m.
The collision occurred on a private road crossing leading to the Horseshoe Estates community north of Kelso, Melonas said. There are no crossing arms at that location, but there are warning signs on both sides of the tracks. A local woman died at the same crossing in a vehicle/locomotive collision involving an Amtrak train in January 2015.
Debris from the car was spread along the tracks Friday morning, and the locomotive carried the car about a half mile north before it could stop.
