According to family members, the brakes on the SUV were not working and the driver lost control of the vehicle. She swerved into the lawn to avoid the intersection. That's when the vehicle crashed into the back of the Salvation Army church building.
Family members tell us the driver was helped out of the vehicle and was walking. The driver was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be okay.
"If it would have been tomorrow, it would have been filled with children. This could have been catastrophic," said Russell Rieder, Salvation Army director of operations.
