Two people died Saturday in a crash involving a car and a trash truck on I-295 northbound (Anacostia Freeway) near Pennsylvania Avenue, SE in D.C.
The deceased - identified by police as 23-year-old Edmond Crawford and and 29 year-old Ltonya Brown, both of Oxon Hill, Md. - were in a 2009 Mitsubishi that ended up wrapped around a utility pole.
A third person in the car was trapped and had to be freed by rescue crews. Authorities said that person was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.
The operator and two passengers of the D.C. government trash truck, which ended up on its side, were also taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 9:30 a.m. crash left northbound 295 closed for many hours into the afternoon as D.C. police investigated.
