Waynesboro, VA : One person died in fatal I-81 crash north of Verona on Monday evening, November 14, 2016

One person is dead after he crashed his car while racing Monday evening with another motorist on Interstate 81, according to police.

The victim is identified as Jeffery A. Stewart, 51, of Amherst, the Virginia State Police said.

The crash occurred a little before 7 p.m. at the 227 mile marker in the northbound lanes, just north of Verona.

According to witnesses, two vehicles were racing each other through northbound traffic on Interstate 81 in excess of 100 mph, the Virginia State Police said in a release.

Witnesses told police that a Nissan, later identified as being driven by Stewart, was passing traffic on the right shoulder just before the crash occurred. While merging back into the travel lane, the driver lost control. As a result, the vehicle spun across the interstate, ran off the left side into the median, went up an embankment and overturned several times, the VSP release said.

Stewart was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, according to police. He was not wearing a seat belt, the release said.

As he spun across the northbound lanes, Stewart made contact with another vehicle traveling north. The vehicle suffered minor damage and the driver was not injured.

The other driver involved in the race continued on I-81. It was described as a black sedan, but no make or model was provided. It's also not clear what model Nissan Stewart was driving.

The crash remains under investigation, police said.
