MICHIGAN CITY, IN : Moped driver airlifted following crash on Thursday afternoon, 25th August, 2016
A moped driver sustained serious head and skull injuries Thursday after crashing his vehicle along Lake Shore Drive in Michigan City.
He was airlifted to South Bend Memorial, and his condition was not known as of late Thursday afternoon.
According to a press release from the Michigan City Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of Lake Shore Drive near the entrance to Lot No. 1 at about 1:50 p.m. following news of the crash. The accident involved a moped and no other vehicle. Upon arrival, officers observed a moped lying on its side with the driver partially underneath it. The man was reportedly bleeding from his head and not conscious at the time. Both the Michigan City Fire Department and La Porte County EMS arrived and began rendering treatment.
After the scene was secure, officers began to speak with two witnesses. They both said the driver was traveling east on Lake Shore Drive, and then, just after passing the entrance to Lot No. 1, ended up going to the far right of the roadway and possibly off onto a paved driveway access. As he attempted to get back onto the roadway, his moped struck the driveway's curb, causing the moped to go out of control. It then flipped up into the air and came down to rest in the traveled portion of Lake Shore Drive, approximately 75 feet from the point of impact with the curb.
The operator, a 31-year-old resident of Michigan City, was taken by ambulance to Franciscan St. Anthony Health-Michigan City. An assessment of his condition was made, and it was determined that due to injuries sustained to his head/skull, he would have to be flown out to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment. The victim's family and friends have been notified by hospital staff of the accident. The investigation of this accident is ongoing.
