Lorain , OH : 24-Years OLd Nicholas Zaenglein killed and two others injured after Crash during police pursuit on Monday , June 1st 2015
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in a one-car crash that killed one person and hospitalized two after a police pursuit around 12:55 a.m. Monday.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Nicholas Zaenglein, 24, of Lorain, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, off North Ridge Road west of Washington Avenue.
Police say Zaenglin was driving a 2005 Ford Focus northeast on North Ridge Road. The car was speeding and went off the right side of the road, hitting a utility pole and overturning, hitting several small trees, police said.
According to an Amherst police media release, Zaenglin drove through a red light at State Route 58, and police tried to pull him car over. Instead, they said he sped up, crossing the center line several times, and ultimately went off the right side of the road, hitting a utility pole and overturning, hitting several small trees, the patrol said.
The passenger in the front seat, Tiffany Woods, 19, of Berlin Heights, was extricated from the car by the Lorain Fire Department. The rear passenger, Drew Murphy, 22, of Lorain, was ejected from the car. Both were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland.
Zaenglin, whose last known address was the 200 block of West 29th Street, had convictions for driving with a suspended license, driving without a valid license and red light and stop sign violations, according to court records.
Police said seat belts were not worn by Zaenglin, Woods or Murphy. The crash remains under investigation.
