Livermore, CA : One woman dead, and five injured after car crashes into California gym Tuesday morning September 22 2015
Police are investigating a deadly crash after an 80-year-old woman drove her car into the Life Style Fitness Gym in Livermore Tuesday morning.
The incident happened at about 6:30 a.m. at a building on 1119 East Stanley Blvd.
According to police, the driver was trying to park her white Mercedes SUV in front of the gym and may have accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal.
The SUV plowed through the lobby’s glass doors and drove 70 feet into the classroom running over six people.
All were being treated for unknown injuries, police said, and at least one victim was in critical condition. Officials later reported the victim, 49-year-old Katheryn Baker, a member at the gym, died from her injuries.
A Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory spokesperson confirmed that Baker was the company’s Chief Financial Officer. She joined LLNL in 2001 before being named CFO in 2012. Baker attended Washington State University and earned a master’s degree in organizational development from Central Washington University.
This is a tragedy for her immediate family as well as her Lab family. Kathy was a special person and a valued member of our Laboratory. It is hard to put into words just how much she will be missed,” said Lab Director Bill Goldstein.
The driver of the SUV was not injured, according to police. Officials say alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash.
