An Iowa resident died in a car crash after his vehicle fell into a washed-out part of the road in Freeman Tuesday morning, the Crawford County Sheriff's Office said.
James Walleser, 59, of Lansing, Iowa, was driving a 2000 Jeep east across a bridge on Highway 82 on his way to work when it fell into a part of the road that had been eroded by high water from the Mississippi River, Crawford County Sheriff Dale McCullick said.
The crash occurred about a half-mile west of Highway 35.
Highway 82 between Highway 35 and Lansing, Iowa will be closed until further notice. The Crawford County Highway Department started repairing the road Tuesday, McCullick said.
Walleser's vehicle was completely submerged in the river and had extensive front-end damage, according to the sheriff's office.
