Orrington, ME : Two people injured in single-car crash in Orrington on Friday night, April 3, 2015

A single-vehicle crash on Friday night that seriously injured two women remained under investigation on Monday, a Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office sergeant said.

Injured in the collision, which occurred about 10 p.m. on River Road, were Erin Salmen, 33, of Stockton Springs and Julie Farrar, 48, of Belfast, Sgt. James Kennedy said Monday.

Both women were taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where Farrar was listed in fair condition, a hospital spokesman said. Information about Salmen’s medical condition was not available, the spokesman said.

According to Kennedy, the accident happened between Hoxie Hill Road and the Bucksport town line about 10 p.m. Friday, when the southbound Mitsubishi sedan Salmen was driving sideswiped a utility pole and then struck a nearby tree head-on.

It took rescue crews two hours to remove Salmen from the wreckage, Kennedy said.

Kennedy said it was not yet clear why the sedan left the roadway but that police believe that speed and alcohol were factors.

He said there were no visible skidmarks at the crash site and that investigators had not been able to interview the women because of the extent of their injuries.
