A person was killed in a motor-vehicle crash on Route 4 in Northwood on Monday afternoon.
State Police said a 2005 Toyota Avalon driven by Merilyn Walker, 81, of Strafford, was traveling westbound on Route 4 around 1:45 p.m., and for unknown reasons crossed over the center line into the path of a 2005 Dodge Caravan driven by Peter Hutchins, 45, of Hillsboro. Walker was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Hutchins, along with passenger Peter Hutchins, 25, of Epson, suffered life-threatening injuries and were taken to a hospital via ambulance. No information on their condition was available on Monday evening.
The crash closed a section of Route 4 around 2 p.m. State Police Capt. Chris Vetter said the crash occurred at Denmark Drive, about a third of a mile east of Johnson’s Seafood and Steak and the Northwood Diner. Vetter said the traffic in both directions was closed to investigate the crash.
Assisting on scene were members of the Northwood Police Department, Northwood/Epsom/Pittsfield Fire & Rescue and EMS crews, and the state Fish and Game Department.
