CANTON, OH : Truck driver charged in crash that killed woman near Louisville on Tuesday, August 8, 2017
A truck driver has been charged with causing a crash that killed a woman on state Route 44 in Nimishillen Township.
Zoran Sakic, 64, of Eastlake, was arrested Tuesday and booked into the Stark County Jail.
He faces misdemeanor counts of vehicular homicide and vehicular manslaughter, court records show. He also was charged with failure to yield at a stop sign.
On June 14, Sakic was driving a tractor-trailer hauling a load of paper as he exited U.S. Route 62 onto a ramp toward state Route 44.
Ohio Highway Patrol troopers said he was coming out from the ramp while turning south toward Louisville when he pulled into the path of a car heading north on Route 44.
The car’s driver, Bethany Kahler, 26, of Mogadore, was killed when her car went under the trailer. At the time, investigators said Sakic failed to yield at the intersection.
Misdemeanor counts were filed because investigators found no aggravating circumstances, such as alcohol or speeding, that would elevate the charges to felonies, said Jennifer Fitzsimmons, assistant Canton city prosecutor.
Court records show Sakic posted a $1,000 bond. A hearing was set for Thursday morning in Canton Municipal Court.
