Staten Island, NY : Mohammad Ejaz Rana, 72, dies after crash on Belt Parkway on Tuesday, October 18, 2016
A 72-year-old Staten Island man has died after he suffered a medical episode and crashed his car on the Belt Parkway in Brooklyn last week, according to police.
Mohammad Ejaz Rana, 72, of Arden Heights, died on Tuesday at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, according to a statement from the NYPD.
Rana was unconscious and unresponsive when police responded at about 9:13 p.m. on Friday to the crash in the westbound Belt Parkway at Pershing Loop, according to police.
The medical episode that precipitated the crash likely was a heart attack, said a source with knowledge of the investigation.
Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that Rana was behind the wheel of a 2008 black Lincoln Town car that was traveling westbound on the Belt Parkway in the left lane approaching Pershing Loop when he suffered a medical condition.
The car decreased speed and struck the center median guard rail. No other persons were injured in the single-car crash, according to the police statement.
EMS responded to the accident and transported Rana to the hospital.
