The victim's family said John Dobs Jr. was walking home from Target after picking up some groceries.
A surveillance photo shows a white SUV, possibly a GMC Envoy, striking Dobs in the middle of the street.
Maria Medina said Dobs, 40, is the father of her four children.
The last she heard he was in a coma at Froedtert Hospital with a broken neck and ribs.
"I hope he makes it out alive. He's a good father. That's the one thing I can say,” Medina said
Police said Dobs is in serious but stable condition.
"The main concern here is the individual didn't stay at the scene of the accident, and we do have somebody that's pretty seriously injured and you are required to do that,” West Milwaukee Police Chief Dennis Nasci said.
Police are reviewing additional surveillance video but aren't ready to release it.
