EAST HAVEN, CT : New Haven boy, 14, crashes into poles in East Haven in stolen car on Wednesday, March 22nd 2017
A 14-year-old boy suffered minor injuries Wednesday morning after crashing a stolen vehicle into a telephone pole on Main Street, police said.
Police responded to a stolen motor vehicle complaint on Thompson Avenue at 3:23 a.m. Wednesday. While en route, the officer observed a grey Honda, matching the reported vehicle's description, stopped at a red light at the intersection of Thompson Avenue and Main Street with its headlights off, according to a news release.
As the officer pulled alongside the vehicle to advise the operator -- later determined to be a juvenile from New Haven -- that his headlights were off, the teen looked at the officer with a blank stare and ignored him, police said.
The officer attempted to signal the juvenile to roll his window down, but he shook his head and took off at a high speed toward Main Street, police said.
The officer turned around and activated his lights and sirens, advised dispatch of the incident and attempted to catch up to the vehicle. But after the officer turned his patrol car around, the Honda was nearly out of sight, police said in the release.
As the 14-year-old drove around the bend on Main Street, near La Bamba Restaurant, the officer lost sight of the vehicle, police said.
After the officer drove around the bend, he saw a large amount of smoke and downed power lines, according to the release. Police said the juvenile had crashed the Honda into a telephone pole in front of 503 Main St.
Police said 21 seconds had passed from when dispatch was advised that the vehicle was fleeing to the time the officer arrived at the crash site. As the officer exited his patrol vehicle, the juvenile exited the Honda's driver seat and he was taken into custody. The teen was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for minor injuries and has since been released, police said.
Police said the vehicle was stolen from a family member and charges will be filed against the teen at a later date.
A portion of Main Street remained closed Wednesday as police continued to investigate. Vehicles are being detoured through the parking lot behind Hobby Lobby onto U.S. Route 1. Vehicles entering town should do so on Frontage Road.
United Illuminating is on scene but the state of any power outages is currently unknown.
