CLINTON, TN : Clinton church mourns pastor killed in mining accident on Monday, 14th January 2019

A Clinton church community is mourning the loss of one of their own.

Jeffrey Slone, 56, was killed at a Kentucky mine Monday. He was struck by a shuttle car while working as a surveyor at the Tennco Energy Toms Fork mine in Bell County.

Slone had 30 years experience in the mining industry. He also served as a part-time pastor.

WATE 6 On Your Side reporter Elizabeth Kuebel paid a visit to Slone's church, Second Baptist, in Clinton. The pastor there, Michael Thompson, is also one of Slone's close friends. He's remembering him as a man with a kind heart and deep faith.

Thompson spoke to us on behalf of Slone's family and said the loss hasn't fully hit him yet. He also said he doesn't really think it will, until he gets ready to preach on Sunday and Jeffrey Slone isn't there.

Thompson describing Slone as a man with a passion for life, for his family but above anything else, a passion for the Lord.

"His other job was working, of course, in the coal mines to provide light and power for families to have physical light. But his greater passion was for them to have spiritual light," Pastor Thompson said. "Constantly smiling, enthusiastic. And he brought the shout in the service. He was one who was excited about the Lord. When you would hear a very loud, resounding amen, everybody in the building knew it was brother Jeff."

Slone was killed in a mining accident Monday morning. The 56-year-old was a brother, father and grandfather.

"They are broken hearted, but their faith is strong. Very strong. They know that Jeff is not dead. He is more alive right now than he ever has been," said Thompson.
