A crash that killed an elderly North Carolina woman also closed part of Interstate 40 westbound in Orange County near Interstate 85 for more than an hour on Saturday afternoon, officials say.
The crash happened just before 4 p.m. along I-40 at mile marker 259 near I-85 in Orange County near Hillsborough.
The wreck happened when an elderly man lost control while driving at mile marker 259, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
The Winston-Salem man was driving with his wife as a passenger in a Honda Accord when the car ran off the highway to the right and the man couldn’t regain control so the car went up an embankment and overturned twice, troopers said.
The man’s wife, who was in her 80s, died at the scene, according to authorities.
The man, who is also in his 80s, is recovering from serious injuries at UNC Hospital.
The road completely reopened around 5:30 p.m.
