Valparaiso, IN : Five children among six injured in Valparaiso crash on Friday night, April 29, 2016
Five children were among six injured in a Friday night crash that resulted in a 40-year-old Valparaiso woman arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
U.S. 30 at Linwood Avenue was shut down for three hours following the crash.
The five children, between ages 9 and 13, were transported to the hospital as was a driver of a vehicle that was traveling westbound on U.S. 30. One of the children was later airlifted to a Chicago hospital. Their condition was not known as of Saturday evening, Valparaiso police said.
Police responded to the rollover crash at 9:30 p.m. Friday night at Linwood Avenue and U.S. 30. Based on the initial investigation, police said it appears a vehicle turning northbound onto Linwood Avenue from eastbound U.S. 30 was struck by the vehicle traveling west on U.S. 30. The vehicle turning northbound contained five children plus the driver, who was arrested on the drunken driving charge. The driver was not injured in the crash, according to police, who said most of the passengers in her vehicle were not restrained with a seat belt.
Police said Saturday night they continue to investigate the crash and additional charges are possible.
