A 19-year-old Ashburnham resident died at the scene of a car crash on Gardner Road on Friday evening, according to a press release from the Police Department.
The release identified the occupant of the car as Zachariah Lashua, a teen who graduated from Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg this spring. According to Monty Tech Principal Tom Browne, he was a graduate from the machine technology program.
About 6:35 p.m., multiple callers told dispatchers a car had crashed into a utility pole near the intersection of South High Street and Gardner Road in Ashburnham, according to the release.
The Ashburnham Police and Fire Departments responded to find Lashua, the sedan's only occupant, trapped inside, the release said.Ashburnham EMS determined the occupant had died, it continued.
A request for a LifeFlight medical helicopter heard over the police scanner was canceled shortly after the crash was reported.
A man visiting from Indiana, Paul Witek, was turning on High Street when he saw the sedan and another car driving at a high speed down the road, he said.
One crashed into a pole and the other, a dark colored pick-up, stopped at the scene, according to Witek.
The crash is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police and Ashburnham Police Department, the press release said.
Lashua's mother, Vee, who runs Brookside Family Farm in Westminster, said the family was too distraught to talk on Saturday.
