One person died when a car crashed into trees and caught on fire early Sunday morning along Interstate 95 in southern St. Johns County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers were called to the scene of an accident along the northbound lanes between U.S. 1 and State Road 206 about 4:45 a.m.
News4Jax was told a car was speeding down the highway and crashed into trees where it caught on fire. The FHP has reported a fatality but we do not know if it was a man or woman. The name of the victim and more details were expected to be released with a preliminary accident report later Sunday.
All lanes of traffic were cleared by 7 a.m., although police and fire rescue were still on scene.
