Wytheville, VA : Woman hurt in Rocky Gap crash on Monday evening, April 3, 2017
A Bluefield woman was hurt on Monday evening after driving off of Interstate 77 in Rocky Gap and traveling down a steep embankment that leads to Wolf Creek.
According to Virginia State Police Trooper Brandon Frye, 69-year-old Patsy Welch was headed north on I-77 at approximately 6 p.m. in a 2016 Ford Fusion when she left the roadway at the 64.1 mile marker, continued on the backside of the guardrail and plunged several feet down a rocky embankment next to an interstate bridge.
The car stopped before hitting the water, and police, fire and rescue workers had to use ropes and a stretcher to pull Welch up another embankment to an awaiting ambulance.
Taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Welch, who was wearing a seat belt, sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Frye said.
He said that alcohol or speed didn't appear to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation. Charges are pending, he said.
