Las Vegas,NV : Teen leaving Desert Breeze Park is hit, killed by SUV on February, Wednesday 28th 2018
A child crossing the street from a west valley skate park on Wednesday night was struck and killed by an SUV, according to Metro Police.
The 14-year-old boy and a group of kids were leaving Desert Breeze Park on Spring Mountain Road and Durango Drive about 7:15 p.m. when the boy, who was trailing the group, was hit, said Sgt. Robert Stauffer via online briefing.
The driver of a 2014 Land Rover, which was heading north on Durango, had a green light, multiple witnesses told police, according to Stauffer. “It’s a person proceeding through a light that probably didn’t expect the kid to be chasing after his friends.”
Some of the children were riding their skateboards, but it wasn’t immediately clear if the child struck was doing the same, Stauffer said. The group was heading to a fast-food restaurant.
The other children made it across safely and were only alerted to what had occurred due to the sound of the impact, Stauffer said.
The driver, who was not impaired, was cooperating with the probe, Stauffer said. A good Samaritan stopped traffic and placed children in her vehicle to keep them warm.
Stauffer reminded parents to "tell their kids to obey the traffic signals" and advised drivers to be alert, especially while commuting through parts with children present. “We gotta be on our toes as drivers.”
This was the 16th traffic-related fatality investigated by Metro this year.
