JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH, LA : Head-on collision kills three people on I-10 on Thursday, September 14, 2017
Three people were killed yesterday and two others were seriously injured after a vehicle crossed the median and struck another vehicle on I-10 between Welsh and Lacassine head-on.
On September 13, 2017, shortly after 5:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 east of Lacassine.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2008 Mazda 3 was traveling east on I-10 when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed the median and struck a westbound 2017 Ram heavy duty truck pulling a trailer on the westbound inside lane of travel head-on.
Three people in the Mazda were pronounced dead at the scene by the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner’s Office. A fourth passenger in the Mazda was transported from the scene with serious injuries. Their names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The driver of the Ram truck, 56-year-old Paul Albert of Lafayette, was transported from the scene by air ambulance to Lafayette General Hospital with serious injuries.
I-10 Westbound was closed at the crash location for about 2 ½ hours as a result of the crash.
Routine toxicology samples were obtained from the drivers and will be submitted for analysis. The crash remains under investigation.
Troop D has investigated 17 fatal crashes resulting in 24 deaths in 2017.
