Panola County, Miisissippi
A Panola County Sheriff's Office investigator hit a couple on their way to the bank near the intersection of Mississippi Highway 6 and Terza Road Tuesday.
Omar Sanad was working inside the Terza One Stop Tuesday afternoon when he heard a crash outside.
"I have no idea exactly what happened, but when I heard it, I looked and I saw it over there," Sanad said.
Sanad recalled that 76-year-old Linda Irwin was stuck in the driver's seat of their Buick truck.
Her husband, 81-year-old William Irwin, was in the passenger's seat.
The Panola County Sheriff's Office investigator had minor injuries. Mississippi Highway Patrol said he was trying to locate a wanted person when the crash happened.
One witness said the investigator was going too fast and didn't stop at the stop sign.
He was driving a 2007 Chevy Silverado and crossed the highway.
Linda was a retired hospice nurse, while William was a retired pilot with the Marine Corps.
Their basement is filled with model airplanes, a hobby that William enjoyed very much.
The two lived in a lake-front house near Sardis Lake.
They were airlifted to Memphis, where they later died. They leave behind three daughters and two grandchildren.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is heading up this investigation.
The Panola County investigator, whose identity has not been released, is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
