Yakima, WA : Car-pedestrian accident on February, Tuesday 13th 2018

I hear that some comments about the recent tragic accident have blamed the pedestrian. As a pedestrian/biker, I have to differ.

On a recent walk home, I stopped at the marked crosswalk on Englewood on the Powerhouse path. A car sped by going west, then a city bus sailed through the intersection going east. Neither paid any attention to the pedestrian, me, standing next to the crosswalk, off the road (no one I talk to ever assumes the cars will actually stop, we don’t go into the crosswalk until the cars are stopped).

Washington state law is that vehicles must yield to pedestrians in or about to enter the crosswalk. I also crossed in the marked crosswalk at 24th and Lincoln on Wednesday evening where again, all cars sped through the intersection, none paying any attention to me.

Let’s spend some time and energy teaching drivers the rules of the road, in order to save lives.
