Baton Rouge,LA : Baton Rouge motorcyclist dies in high-speed crash on September, Wednesday 28th 2017
A Baton Rouge motorcyclist who was observed speeding through St. Tammany Parish at more than 100 mph Wednesday died when he crashed shortly after entering Tangipahoa Parish, State Police said.
Andrew Joseph Alessi, 42, was killed in the crash on La. 22 in Tangipahoa Parish near the St. Tammany Parish line.
About 1 p.m. Wednesday, the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office received several calls about a motorcycle speeding westbound on La. 22 west of Mandeville, State Police said.
Radar from a Madisonville police officer indicated the motorcycle was traveling 123 mph in a 35-mph zone on La. 22. The officer activated his emergency lights and sirens but lost sight of the motorcycle as the cyclist continued westbound on La. 22 toward Ponchatoula, State Police said.
At 1:17 p.m., troopers were notified of a crash with injuries involving the 2012 Ducati motorcycle.
A 2016 Dodge Ram driven by 53-year-old Henry J. Jacobs III, of Abita Springs, was in the process of making a legal right turn onto Maison La Lafitte Boulevard from La. 22 westbound when Alessi attempted to pass Jacobs’ truck on the right shoulder, State Police said. After entering the shoulder, Alessi crashed into the right side of Jacobs truck and was ejected from his motorcycle.
Although wearing a helmet, Alessi suffered severe injuries in the crash. He was transported to a hospital in critical condition and died shortly after arrival.
Blood samples from Alessi will be sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis. Jacobs provided troopers with a voluntary breath sample, which showed no amount of alcohol present, State Police said.
