Millersville, MD : Anne Arundel police officer injured in multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 97 in Millersville on Wednesday morning, Aug 5, 2015

An Anne Arundel police officer that was injured in a multi-vehicle crash Wednesday morning on Interstate 97 in Millersville has been released from the hospital, county police said.

The department posted on its Twitter account shortly before 2 p.m. that the officer had been released from the hospital and was resting at home.

Police and firefighters responded to the area of southbound I-97 and Route 32 around 8:20 a.m. It took firefighters about 30 minutes to extract the officer, believed to be about 40-years-old, from his police cruiser, fire department spokesman Russ Davies said.

He was taken by state police helicopter to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with injuries that the fire department spokesman said at the time were believed to be serious.

State police at the agency's Glen Burnie barrack said that the cruiser had been rear-ended causing it to go off the road. Charges are pending against the driver who rear-ended the officer's car, county police said.

The accident stopped traffic on both north- and southbound I-97.

Additional information was not immediately available Wednesday afternoon.
