Wailuku, HI : Maui 6-year-old dies in dirt bike accident on Sunday, December 28, 2014
A six-year-old boy has died following a dirt bike accident on Maui.
Maui Police responded to the incident around 12:30 p.m. on Sunday in Makawao, at Eddie Tam Gym.
Ehukai Dennis was transported from the park to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition, where he later died.
Sources say Ehukai got the dirt bike as a Christmas gift.
A makeshift memorial has sprung up at the park where Ehukai's accident happened. Pictures of him and his dad are tied to the fence, along with teddy bears, flowers and a balloon that says “I'm sorry.”
His father, Shaun, shared a familiar sentiment on his Facebook saying, “jus one of so many fun times wit my boy. i luv u so much ehu. i miss u n im sorry.” Another one says, “my little soja i miss u so much n im so sorry failed u as a good dad. i wish i could take ur place. im so lost wit out u. i miss u my son.”
Ehukai's family members were too distraught to do an interview; all they can think about are the memories they have of him. But over the phone, Shaun said his son could make anyone laugh and he was very special. He says Ehukai was born with a heart condition and had multiple heart surgeries growing up, but that didn't hold him back. Shaun says Ehukai had a huge smile on his face while at the park that day and that he loved his son more than he loved himself.
While Shaun has been criticized online for letting his son ride without protective gear, police tell us the helmet law doesn't apply if the rider is off of the road.
The investigation is ongoing.
